“Line of Fire” stars and creator preview the new NBC series, which combines family drama and procedural intrigue to give new meaning to the phrase family business.

An FBI agent and a U.S. Marshal approach the scene of a fatal shooting. They are tasked with determining if what happened is as clear-cut as it seems. (Spoiler alert: It’s not.) The situation is grave, urgent. As they near a clearing on a cliff, two dead bodies lying ahead of them, the FBI agent Clare Hollingsworth (Kat Cunning) casually mentions that she is coming from her boyfriend’s place. U.S. Marshal Jane Hollingsworth (Hope Davis) asks her daughter, “Is he the guy you’ve been dating for six months yet only mentioned existing two weeks ago?” Clare responds tersely, “I knew you pulled me into this to tell me how I’m disappointing you.”

Welcome to Line of Fire, where the family dynamics are as messy and complicated as a crime scene. That exchange neatly sums up the new series from creator Joshua Safran (Gossip Girl, Smash, Quantico). Crime is tough, family can be tougher.

Throughout the pilot episode (premiering Monday, Sept. 21, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC), we are introduced to the entire Hollingsworth clan, all of whom work for some branch of federal law enforcement.

Filling out the family photo is Jane’s dad — and Clare’s estranged husband — Mike (Peter Krause), who’s on the precipice of retiring from the Secret Service, where he works with son Micah (Tommy O’Brien), as well as youngest son Russell (Taylor Bloom), who just started at the Department of Justice.…..
