'The Rookie' confirms new release months ahead of long-awaited season 9

The Rookiehas quietly become one of the more reliable success stories on ABC. The Nathan Fillion-led procedural closed out its eighth season on May 4 with "The Bandit," its 144th episode overall. Tim finally proposed to Lucy on the beach, and she said yes, only for the newly engaged pair to be drugged and kidnapped by associates of Heath Everett in the closing moments. The show now gets to sit on the cliffhanger for the better part of a year.

Since 2018, the series has done something most network dramas can't manage this deep into their runs. Variety's multiplatform ratings breakdown found The Rookie was the number one show of 2025 with teens aged 12 to 17, an audience the procedural genre isn't usually built for, largely thanks to streaming. Season 7 averaged more than 10 million viewers per episode once streaming and traditional viewing were combined. The catch, as fans know all too well, is that ABC treats The Rookie as a mid-season show, which means Season 9 isn't expected until around January 2027.

According to Deadline, ABC will now fill part of that gap with an extended cut of Season 8, Episode 10, "His Name Was Martin," on Hulu. It will feature roughly five and a half minutes of footage that didn't make the broadcast version. "His Name Was Martin" starts with what seems like a routine call at an abandoned psychiatric hospital, but it quickly turns into one of The Rookie's strangest episodes. A cleanup crew at the site has been exposed to a neurotoxin, leaving the officers to deal with workers who are suddenly aggressive and unpredictable. In the middle of the chaos, Lucy ends up isolated. The episode sees her kill one of the affected workers when he attacks her. The fallout from that shooting shapes much of her arc through the back half of the season.

There are additional action beats in new footage as the team evades the chemically affected workers, which is a nice bonus but probably not the draw here. The more meaningful restoration is a scene that was cut for time, one that provides context for the emotional conversation between Lucy and Tim at the end of the episode, in which he consoles her after the shooting. Anyone who watched The Rookie Season 8 knows that Lucy and Tim's dynamic remains the emotional engine of the show, so any deleted material connecting to that final scene is likely to be the reason most fans seek the extended cut.….
