The Rookie has become one of ABC's biggest hits through the years, but as it closes in on its upcoming ninth season, things have become increasingly more complicated for the series. Premiering in 2018, The Rookie took some time to find its audience and make an impact, but as viewers flocked to the series for its quirky mix of standard police procedural and comedy, the series grew in what it could manage. Starting out with three pairs of rookie cops and training officers, the series began to branch out after some changes were made to the cast and stories widened

While John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) has long been the main focus of the series, as the rest of the Mid-Wilshire team at the LAPD has grown, their stories on screen have too. Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil), the only other remaining rookie from Nolan's FTO training period, has developed her own skills, moving from a detective track to a sergeant while developing her relationship with her former training officer, Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). Former training officers Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) and Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox), who have moved away from training, have continued to work together as detectives in the division.

With the cast incorporating more stories than ever and branching out from the initial cast, bringing in romantic partners with their own storylines, new rookies, and groups of criminals season after season, The Rookie has gotten busier each year. Unfortunately, that business could ultimately be the show's undoing moving forward.
