‘The Rookie’ Creator Alexi Hawley Teases Season 8 Final Episodes, Says He’s “Hopeful & Optimistic” About Spinoff ‘North’: “The Pilot Came Out Great”

There are four episodes left in Season 8, starting with 815, “Survive the Streets,” airing tonight, April 13.

“Next up is our true crime, mockumentary episode that we do every season” he said.

“They’re a little polarizing,” Hawley admitted about the annual stunt, which originated during the pandemic.

“They came out of, how do we do episodes that are safer for the crew,” he said. “They’re always a lot of fun for us, they can be a little goofy but we enjoy them.”

“Survive the Streets” will be followed by the final three episodes of the season.

“It’s safe to say that the Monica (Bridget Regan) story comes back in a big way, the task force and Monica,” Hawley said. “Also, some story that we set up early in the season comes back towards the end.”

‘The Rookie: North’

Along with finishing Season 8 of The Rookie, Hawley has been working on spinoff The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis. Shot in late February, the pilot has been completed and delivered to ABC.

“The pilot came out great,” Hawley said. “The network seems super happy with it. You never know until you know but we have a really amazing cast, led by Jay Ellis who’s a star; it was a joy to make that with him and the rest of them. You know me, I’m just an optimistic person in general, so I’m hopeful and optimistic that we could be talking about that in the near future.”

The Rookie: North centers on Alex Holland (Ellis) who believed his mid-life wasn’t worthy of a crisis. But after a violent home invasion ignites a dormant purpose, Alex battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie. Policing from the urban coast to the rural forest where backup isn’t just 5-minutes away, Alex must prove to his skeptical training officer, his fellow rookies, and himself, that he’s finally found something worthy of the fight….
