Red-haired actress Bryce Dallas Howard was perfectly comfortable shedding all of her clothes for a love scene in the movie Manderlay. But sitting with her parents while they watched it was something else entirely.
Howard, the daughter of A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man director Ron Howard, couldn't bring herself to join her parents when they came to her house to see a copy of Manderlay. The 24-year-old actress vacated to another room instead, and said that her parents were understanding about her nakedness: ["They came over and they watched it and I just, like, went into the other room 'cause I didn't want to be there. Yeah, it's quite revealing but I think I'm lucky 'cause my parents are artists so it would be quite hypocritical for them to say like, 'Oh, that's disgusting,' or something like that. They know what my job is and they know what my intentions are and that's what they're most proud of."]
In Manderlay, Howard plays the stubborn daughter of a mob boss who decides to free the slaves still working on a plantation in the 1930s. She tries to teach them about democracy and ends up learning about the uncontrollable nature of humans.
Manderlay was written and directed by Breaking The Waves and Dancer In The Dark's Lars Von Trier. The movie opened in New York last week, spreads to Los Angeles today (February 3rd), and rolls out to other cities in coming weeks.
