There are very creative ways of abandoning the game, and we salute the efforts of all those who expanded the boundaries and definition of what it takes to be a Survivor quitter. Which brings us to Rhode Island Rob on Survivor 51. As has happened to many a player before him, Rob got in the jungle, could never get dry, could never get any sleep, got frustrated losing challenges in downpours, and said to himself, “Man, this kinda sucks!”
So Rob was ready to check out. But he couldn’t just go full Hannah Rose and quit. He wanted to quit with style… if there is such a thing. So he hatched a plan. A glorious plan. A gloriously terrible plan.
He would tell on-the-outs Eric to use or give him his Shot in the Dark so Eric could not vote, and then Rob would go and vote for himself, apparently under the belief that it would lead to an 8-1 tally, and then use his idol on Eric so all those votes were nullified, and then Rob would be voted out with the sole vote for him — which he cast himself.
The only problem is… that entire plan has more holes that a freakin’ colander. Where should we begin? Should it be with the fact that Rob asked Eric to hand over his Shot in the Dark without explaining any part of his plan beyond that?
Or should we start with the hubris it takes to assume you know where every single vote is going, which you would need to do for the plan to work? Or should we just commence with the fact that… oh, I don’t know… YOU CANNOT VOTE FOR YOURSELF ON SURVIVOR!!!
Oh no, that screwed up everything,” Rob said to no one in particular, except perhaps his Survivor legacy. “Damn. Oh, man”
Oh, man, indeed. But, incredibly, the best part was still to come. Because even after all that happened, and even after Rob made a public show of telling us how he was making this huge selfless sacrifice because he felt Eric still deserved to be in the game — Rob went ahead and tried to vote Eric out!!!!!!
