He was making an amusing observation in a party atmosphere, not attacking anyone, trying to harm anyone.
I have been mistaken for being Italian many, many times. I don't take personal offense as it is an honest mistake. Some trans people are honestly and innocently misgendered as well. People aren't tarred and feathered for it. Nor should they be as long as it was an honest mistake.
It is not racist not to be able to distinguish what someone's background is.
It may have been a dumb observation and joke but it wasn't racist.
I have had people come over to our table at a wedding and say the same thing. Look! It's the Italian table! When two were Portuguese and one was of a German background, the rest were Italian so they were outnumbered, yes. Nobody got pissed off about it because it wasn't meant as a malicious comment. Intent and context always matter when it comes to accountability.
