I don't think it needed to be put in anyone's ear per se. CBS did that right up front with their casting announcement for their reality shows this season.

And with their casting choices. They usually casted 2 (sometimes 3) black contestants every season to be consistent with US demographics. This season they dramatically jumped that to 6 for both Survivor and BB. When contestants look around and see that, it's gotta stick out like a flashing sign. No way they didn't notice that, and the wheels start turning on an obvious alliance. Especially in these hyper race-focused days.
