Shifting gears season 3's fate seemingly revealed in new ABC report

The fate of Shifting Gearsseason 3 has seemingly been revealed.

Created by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, with Michelle Nader serving as showrunner and executive producer, the multi-camera sitcom debuted in January 2025. It focuses on Matt (Tim Allen), who is a widower and runs a car restoration shop. His life is turned upside down when he reluctantly welcomes his estranged daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), and her children into his home.

It has been over two months since the Allen and Dennings comedy wrapped season 2, and even though the series has not been officially picked up, a new report byDeadlineconfirms that Shifting Gears season 3 will happen.

The confirmation comes in the context of looking at what ABC's scripted television schedule will look like for the upcoming 2026-2027 broadcast year, and it's noted that ABC is expected to pick up all of its current scripted programs across comedies and dramas. That would also mean renewals for the new detective drama R.J. Decker and the Scrubs revival.

There is a caveat. Because ABC is likely to pick up The Rookie: North, a spinoff of the long-running police procedural The Rookie, some series may be renewed with smaller episode counts, but that has yet to be determined.

With the cast of Shifting Gearsalso including Seann William Scott, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis, the ABC multi-cam has steadily evolved beyond the initial friction between father and daughter to hone in on the other talented actors in the ensemble. It has also welcomed several notable guests.

The show has used its premise to welcome in familiar faces and stage reunions, making Shifting Gears a cameo goldmine. Jenna Elfman has recurred as Matt's love interest, Eve, along with appearances from talk show host legend Jay Leno, Grey's Anatomy alum Jesse Williams, Disney star Brenda Song, comedian Gabriel Iglesias, and Platonic actor Luke Macfarlane.

Allen has likewise enjoyed reunions with his co-stars from Last Man Standing and Home Improvement, with Nancy Travis, Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning all dropping in so far. Shifting Gears season 2 ended with relationship cliffhangers for both Matt and Riley ….
