Nico Santos on Rene's return to St. Denis & reuniting with Superstore family

Rene was back in the building for Episode 8 of St. Denis Medical.
When the sassy RN played by guest star Nico Santos first appeared in Season 1's "Salamat You Too," Val (Kaliko Kauahi) described Rene as the Regina George of the hospital's highly-competent but clique-ish "Filipino mafia." His mean girl reputation definitely holds in "A Waste of Time and Marble," though he winds up stirring division among the staff for arguably-valid reasons. But Rene's noble cause doesn't make his open disdain for charge nurse Alex (Alison Tolman) any less hilarious to watch.
NBC Insider spoke to Santos — who Superstore fans will remember as Mateo — about Rene and Alex's rocky relations, and reuniting with pals from his previous show on set.
Why doesn't Rene like Alex on St. Denis Medical?
During his Season 1 appearance, Alex and Rene had a power struggle after Alex tried to reassign members of Rene's clique to different teams (in part because she suspected they were insulting her in Tagalog). The move landed Alex in unconscious bias training, and she came to understand that Rene would've wanted her to talk to him about her concerns first. But from their first encounter in the December 15 episode, when Rene gives Alex a shady compliment on her "new wig," it's clear still they're far from chummy….
