MEXICO CITY — Mexico reacted with outrage Wednesday to the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by immigration authorities in Texas earlier this week. It dominated headlines and stirred outrage, from social media to the presidential National Palace.
President Claudia Sheinbaum vowed Wednesday to respond to the killing with “legal measures” that would “go beyond” complaining to international bodies or releasing a diplomatic statement.
Sheinbaum spokeswoman Paulina Silva Rodríguez declined to clarify what sort of legal response the Mexican president intended.
“We cannot permit the mistreatment of our brothers in the United States,” Sheinbaum said. “So we are preparing measures.”
The response underscored the mounting diplomatic tensions between the United States and Mexico, which have clashed in recent months over how to combat drug cartels and the alleged complicity of government officials in territories dominated by the gangs. Sheinbaum, who has long sought to avoid confrontation with President Donald Trump and preserve cordiality, has increasingly taken a harder stance against what she’s called U.S. “interference” in Mexico.
