Connections Through Jeffrey Epstein Sulayem maintained a correspondence with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein from 2007 to 2018, during which Trump- related topics arose.
In January 2017, days before Trump's first presidential inauguration, Sulayem emailed Epstein asking if it was "worth attending" and if it would be "possible to shake hand with trump." Epstein suggested a phone call to discuss, noting many attendees, and advised Sulayem on the event.
Sulayem joked with Epstein about attire for the occasion. Separately, Sulayem received an invitation to the inauguration from Tom Barrack, a longtime Trump friend and later U.S. ambassador to Turkey, due to Sulayem's global business stature In late February 2018, Epstein emailed Sulayem about his friendship with Steve Bannon (Trump's former senior adviser), saying, "We have become friends you will like him." Sulayem replied, "Trump doesn't like him," to which Epstein responded, "dont belive thepress."
In May 2018, Sulayem emailed Bannon proposing a meeting in Abu Dhabi, offering a helicopter tour; Bannon agreed, though it's unclear if it happened.
Business and Real Estate Connections Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, as chairman of Nakheel (a Dubai government-affiliated developer), first connected with Donald Trump in the mid-2000s during Dubai's real estate boom. In 2004, Nakheel hosted a luncheon at the "21" Club in New York for potential investors, including Trump, to promote projects like artificial islands shaped like a world map and palm tree. Trump expressed admiration, stating, "They are filling up the ocean— amazing!" By 2005, Trump partnered with Nakheel to develop the Trump International Hotel & Tower Dubai, a tulip-shaped luxury hotel on the Palm Jumeirah island. Sulayem described the collaboration as leveraging Trump's expertise in high-end development, noting Trump was "really blown away by the size of the projects here." The project featured 50,000 square feet of retail space, 378 hotel rooms, and 399 apartments. A 2008 photo shows Trump, Sulayem, and Nakheel's then-CEO Chris O'Donnell at a promotional party for the project. Units went on sale in June 2008, but the global financial crisis hit Dubai's market hard, leading Nakheel to cancel the deal in 2011. The partnership was revived in April 2025, with Eric Trump announcing new plans for the Trump International Hotel and Tower Dubai.
These dealings highlight Sulayem's role in facilitating Trump's early entry into Middle Eastern real estate, aligning with Trump's broader ventures in the UAE, such as golf courses and developments in Dubai. In June 2019, Epstein's internal list for Bannon included Sulayem's name.
Additionally, Sulayem introduced Indian businessman Anil Ambani to Epstein in February 2017, with Ambani using Epstein's access to pitch Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda to Trump.
