Rob Sand walked runways in Paris and Milan in the early 2000s
By Catherine Santino Published on November 5, 2026 02:44PM ESTIowa’s governor-elect Rob Sand has walked the high-fashion runways of Paris and Milan.
The 44-year-old Democrat, who won the race for governor in the midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3, worked as a fashion model before pursuing his political aspirations. Per Harper’s Bazaar, Sand’s modeling gigs in the early 2000s helped pay for his college degrees (he studied political science at Brown University and earned a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law).
Sand reportedly signed to Elite Model Management, though he no longer has a profile on the company’s website. In 2007, Newsweek reported that the politician modeled in shows for Giuliano Fujiwara, Number (N)ine and Prada. He appeared in the Prada menswear Spring 2003 ready-to-wear show in Milan in August 2002.
Sand told Newsweek that he missed the opportunity to caucus for then-presidential candidate Howard Dean in Iowa in January 2004 because he was modeling in Milan. “It had to be one or the other,” he told the outlet. “And I chose to go to Europe.”
