The latest push reflects a growing divide within conservative politics over reproductive healthcare policy. By Macy Meinhardt, Multimedia reporter June 18, 2026
Texas Republicans are moving to broaden their political fight over reproductive health, approving a party platform that calls for the end of IVF across the state.
The proposal was adopted during the annual GOP convention held in Houston last weekend, where delegates advanced language that seeks to protect fetal life from what it describes as "destructive practices, such as IVF and commercial surrogacy."
The move places in vitro fertilization—an increasingly common fertility treatment—directly within the party's broader effort to redefine reproductive health policy in Texas, extending the debate well beyond abortion.
IVF defined as target of new platform language Under the platform's framework, advocates argue that routine IVF practices–involving the creation, freezing or destruction of embryos—are equivalent to the destruction of human life.
"Since when did it become okay to selectively reduce the children that are implanted in our womb? IVF is wicked, it needs to be abolished," said Kristine Harhoef, a delegate with Senate District 4. IVF is widely used across the United States. More than 100,000 babies were born through IVF last year, and Texas remains one of the largest markets for treatment, according to CDC records. The process involves fertilizing eggs in a lab and transferring an embryo into the uterus, while additional embryos may be frozen, donated or discarded.
