Kris Harrison said the shooting was accidental. Last month his British ex-wife flew to Dallas to demand that police reopen the investigation.
On January 10, 2025, in the northern Dallas suburb of Prosper, Kris Harrison fatally shot his 23-year-old daughter Lucy in the chest with a Glock 9mm semiautomatic handgun. On that much, everyone agrees. The rest is the subject of intense dispute. Why did Harrison take the gun out? Did it “just go off,” as he told police, or did he intentionally pull the trigger? How intoxicated was he?
Lucy, a fashion buyer who lived in Warrington, England, had been visiting her father for the holidays. Her death was widely covered in the British media—especially after it was revealed that, earlier that morning, she and her father had fought about President-elect Donald Trump, who was about to be inaugurated for a second term. “Father shot daughter dead after ‘arguing about Donald Trump,’ ” read a headline in The Times of London. “Mother describes horrifying moment she learned her daughter was shot dead by Trump-loving father,” echoed The Mirror.
Last month, Lucy’s mother, Jane Coates, flew to Dallas from her home in Warrington in search of answers. She had requested meetings with the chief of the Prosper Police Department, which investigated the shooting in partnership with the Texas Rangers, and with Collin County prosecutor Bill Wirskye, who presented the case to a grand jury as a potential criminally negligent homicide in June 2025. After listening to the presentation, the jurors declined to indict Harrison. The decision provoked outrage in both the U.S. and the UK, where a member of Parliament later called for a governmental inquiry.
Accompanied by her British lawyer, Radd Seiger, Coates climbed the steps to the Collin County courthouse on the morning of September 28. A camera crew from the British broadcaster Sky News, which had accompanied her on the trip, filmed Coates as she walked into the glass lobby and made her way through security. About ten minutes later, she and Seiger walked back outside to hold a press conference.
There had been no meeting. Despite receiving advance notice of Coates’s visit, neither Wirskye nor district attorney Greg Willis was available to talk. “It doesn’t matter if you’re an English parent or an American parent, you would fly to the ends of the earth for your child,” a tearful Coates told about a dozen local and international reporters. “I just wanted to sit with the investigators and with the DA—for them to look me in the eye and tell me how this investigation was rigorous and thorough.”
Coates and Seiger then made the twenty-minute drive to the Prosper Police Department, where they were again turned away without a meeting. But they weren’t giving up. They stayed in Dallas another week, returning on four occasions to Collin County but never getting the meetings they requested. Back in England, they have continued pressing their case in the media.
