BREAKING: Trump's media company just lost its $3.8 billion war against the Washington Post Trump's social media company just got humiliated in federal court, and the price tag on the loss is staggering.
A federal judge in Tampa threw out a $3.8 billion defamation lawsuit that Trump Media and Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, had filed against the Washington Post. The case is over. The Post walks away clean.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Barber ruled that Trump Media failed to present evidence that would let a jury find the paper acted with actual malice, the high legal bar public figures must clear to win a defamation claim. In plain terms, the company could not show the Post knowingly published anything false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth. The judge granted the Post's motion for summary judgment and rejected Trump Media's.
The lawsuit, filed back in 2023, targeted a Post article that examined Trump Media's scramble to line up financing ahead of the merger that eventually took the company public. Trump Media's lawyers called it a years-long crusade and an egregious hit piece. The judge saw it differently: a case with no evidence behind it.
This is what accountability looks like. A powerful company with the president's name on the door tried to use the courts to punish a newspaper for reporting, and a federal judge shut it down. The free press did its job, and the law backed it up.
Trump Media says it may appeal. But for now the message from the courtroom is clear. You do not get to bury journalism just because you do not like what it reports
