On Wednesday he sent a formal letter to Senator Mitch McConnell, demanding a direct and transparent update on the senator's health after weeks of silence and mounting concern across the state. McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized since June 14. Emergency responders were called to his home that day for an unconscious person, according to a public dispatch call reviewed by CBS News. Since then, his office has offered almost nothing, refusing to explain why he was admitted or confirm what happened. Beshear said the people of Kentucky deserve better than speculation and stonewalling. He wrote that Kentuckians have grown increasingly worried about McConnell's ability to serve, and that anyone who holds public office owes their constituents honesty about whether they can do the job. He put the principle plainly. Officeholders make a commitment to represent the people and to always be transparent, he said, and that requires clear communication about one's ability to serve.
