In 1819, a 17-year-old boy was shipped to a forced labor camp in Mississippi owned by 1 of the richest human traffickers in the state

Joe Davis essentially owned an slave island. Aside from being a lawyer he made most of his money owning slaves.
While he was called a "planter," He didn't plant ----

One thing ppl get wrong about history is they think that they think slaveowners got rich off of slave labor. Some did. But many got land, title & wealth BECAUSE THEY OWNED SLAVES

Joe had so many slaves, he used them as collateral to buy land. Then he used the land as collateral to buy MORE SLAVES

When 17-year-old Ben got to slave island, he tried to escape. He didn't get very far because they were on an island and he needed a boat, so he started plotting

Joe realized Ben was smart & put him in charge of running slave island. Ben established a line of credit with the merchants he met

But he didn't buy a boat because it would be too slow

1. swear they were a citizen of a specific country
2. Swear they invented the thing

And since enslaved people weren't citizens

A few weeks later, Joe Davis's brother Jefferson quit his job & become president of the Confederate States of America

He gave Joe a heads up, though. So Joe skedaddled away from slave Island and left Ben in charge
