Think about all the money spent to study vaccines and autism and then think of where that money could have been spent instead - finding the real cause, treatments, money to states to support early intervention programs.
Here's a brief timeline of autism
1940s - first recognized case
1980 - autism became an official diagnosis (prior to that it was tucked into childhood schizophrenia) and only severe cases were really recognized
1990s - we began to recognize it as a spectrum of symptoms
2001 - M-CHAT was developed. This is the screening tool that we given to parents when their child is 18mo-2years old. After this was developed and became widely used, diagnosis of autism steadily increased.
We have since developed more and more ways to screen and test for autism as we learn more and more about the condition (funny how when we look for something we tend to find it). There have been over 100 genes linked to autism.
