During 2020 and 2021, more people were at home, live television viewing increased, and shows like Big Brother benefited from having a larger captive audience. As life returned to normal ratings for many broadcast shows to decline.
Beyond the pandemic effect, television habits have changed significantly. Audiences are now spread across streaming services, social media, YouTube, and other platforms, while younger viewers are less likely to watch live episodes as most of them don't subscribe to any kind of cable service.
Across North America, roughly one-third of households no longer have traditional cable or satellite TV and for Gen Z who are just getting their own places about 50–60% do not have traditional cable or satellite TV.
Cable is dying. Streaming is the future and that has changed the way ratings are calculated.
