I just found the whole thread of Lady Edith and her child a little strange. First she tells Tom she's going away. then she takes her child from the farmer and his wife and heads straight for London and her boyfriends publishing company. Did she really think she would not be found there? So Lady Crawley, after the farmer's wife rats out Edith, enlists her sister to go to London with her and surprise, surprise they find Edith at the publishing firm. But Edith says she cannot leave. She must stay and run the business in honor of now dead boyfriend.
But then when presented with some cockamamie plan she all of a sudden is fine with leaving London and integrating her child into the Crawley clan.
In the meantime, the rest of the family makes no connection between Edith and the child and her attachment to her. Just seemed a bit forced and fake to me.
Oh and by the way, could Mary be any bitchier? God she has a cold heart.
